Editing & Proofreading

WordHawk is here to help you understand the type of editing you require. If you are unsure, send me a sample of your written material and I will tell you what I think it needs. See below for an overview of the different types of editing Wordhawk offers.

What type of editing do you need?

Proofreading

A proofread is the final read before a piece of work is printed and published to catch any remaining minor errors, typos, incorrect spacings, etc. This is suitable if your content has already been approved and you are confident it does not require any further edits.

Copy-editing

A copy-edit includes everything a proofread does, but is broader in its remit, i.e. it will encompass spelling and grammar but also factual errors and inconsistencies. It will also entail identifying and correcting repetitions, clunky turns of phrase or awkward sentences. A copy-edit will include checking for clarity and sense and is the edit that happens after any major re-writing or structural work has been done to the text. A copy-edit is like putting a beautiful wax-polish on an antique wood table.

Structural editing

A structural edit is more substantive as it focuses on the organisation and flow of what you've written, looking at how it's all put together and whether the ideas run logically and coherently. Is what you've written the best it can be? Wordhawk will provide detailed feedback and suggestions on your written material, the aim of which will always be to ensure your story or message is being communicated in the best way possible. This is the shaping of your text.
